Amazing things have happened in 100 years in the city of Miami Beach... On March 26, 1915, Miami Beach was incorporated and the rest is history! An island city, a little over 7 square miles in size, Miami Beach separates the waters of the Atlantic Ocean from those of Biscayne Bay. The city has always been known as a tourist-friendly vacation spot. Its cosmopolitan atmosphere and diverse population attract droves of visitors annually. Miami Beach was joined to the mainland with the opening of a bridge across Biscayne Bay in 1913. A few years later a period of expansion was noted in the city, whose growth was spurred by the building of small hotels along Ocean Drive in what is now known as the Art Deco District. The district houses the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world. The establishment of major Army Air Corps training centers on Miami Beach during World War II brought additional expansion. During the 1960’s an enterprising international population made Miami Beach its home, giving the city its present-day distinctiveness and flavor. Since the 1990’s, Miami Beach has experienced exponential growth of worldwide popularity. Its economy has boomed with the construction of parks, museums, galleries, condo-living solutions, corporate and retail buildings, as well as massive entertainment venues. The beaches are acknowledged as some of the finest in the world and attract millions every year. Today, Miami Beach is known as "the American Riviera" and also as the "preferred capital city of Latin America." The perfect balance of sun and fun with business, wellness, culture, the arts, fine dining, and entertainment makes Miami Beach "the hottest destination on the planet."
