Visa to a dream.

Wake up. Take a quick shower. Get dressed. Drink a glass of milk. Catch the taxi. Go, go, go!

Date: September 14, 1991.

Time: 4:30 am

Place: Havana International Airport.

I am excited. I am thrilled. I have uncontrollable happiness because I am flying into Miami International Airport with my family. I am starting a new chapter. I am starting a new life.

Our flight was to Kingston, Jamaica first. Then an afternoon flight would bring us to Miami.

I was 20 years old. I remembered that day with so much excitement. And one of the things I remembered the most were my expectations to see my grandfather Aurelio again. My grandpa taught me my first words in English. My grandpa taught me to hustle and to become the entrepreneur I am today.

He was in his 70th when he got in a boat risking his life to find freedom. He worked very very hard to save enough money to bring us to freedom. And he did!

We spent several hours in Kingston, Jamaica waiting for our connecting flight to Miami. We had no money at all. We couldn’t eat anything in the whole day. However, we were happy. We spent those hours in the most absolute bliss. Finally, we checked in. We got our boarding passes and we were only a couple of hours away from starting our new life.

I left Cuba with the set of clothes I was wearing that day. We brought a small bag with my childhood photos. That was it!

I had everything I wanted at the moment.

25 years later, I still remember.

I feel very emotional as I recall all our friends and family running behind the car that took us to the airport. Everyone was crying and saying their good-byes. Like us, many families leaves their countries looking for better. Many families follow their dreams to give their loved ones a better life.

Now, wherever you are in the world, I want to ask you a question: What do you truly want in your life?

Is it more happiness?

Is it more freedom?
